SPORT NEWS: Leicester City sacked manager Claudio Ranieri

Leicester City sacked manager Claudio Ranieri on Thursday, just nine months after he led the club to their first Premier League title.
Ranieri guided Leicester to the most unlikely of title wins last season and went on to claim FIFA's Coach of the Year for the achievement.

However, Ranieri and Leicester have struggled this season, with the club sitting just one point and one position above the relegation zone, having failed to score a single league goal in 2017.

Leicester still have a chance of reaching the Champions League quarterfinals following Wednesday's 2-1 round-of-16 first-leg defeat to Sevilla, but as the prospect of Premier League relegation would mean losing over £100 million, the club opted to remove Ranieri ahead of Monday's clash against Liverpool.

A Leicester statement read: "Leicester City Football Club has tonight [Thursday] parted company with its first team manager, Claudio Ranieri.
Club statement: #lcfc and Claudio Ranieri part company: https://t.co/C5qnSVxDgU pic.twitter.com/VqlHy1I6Ut
– Leicester City (@LCFC) February 23, 2017
"Claudio, appointed City manager in July 2015, led the Foxes to the greatest triumph in the club's 133-year history last season, as we were crowned champions of England for the first time. His status as the most successful Leicester City manager of all time is without question.

"However, domestic results in the current campaign have placed the club's Premier League status under threat, and the board reluctantly feels that a change of leadership, while admittedly painful, is necessary in the club's greatest interest."

The departure of Ranieri means that four of the last five Premier League-winning managers have left their jobs before the end of the following season, following Roberto Mancini (2011-12 winner, sacked May 2013), Sir Alex Ferguson (2012-13 winner, retired May 2013) and Jose Mourinho (2015-16 winner, sacked December 2015).

Leicester were favourites to be relegated upon Ranieri's appointment in July 2015, having been involved in a relegation fight the season before under Nigel Pearson.
However, inspired by players including Jamie Vardy, Riyad Mahrez and N'Golo Kante, Leicester went on to challenge at the top of the table, eventually seeing off Tottenham to the title.
But Leicester were unable to keep hold of Kante in the summer, with the midfielder leaving for Chelsea, while Vardy and Mahrez have struggled to replicate last season's form, contributing to Leicester's decline.

Leicester gave Ranieri a contract extension in August and issued a vote of confidence for their manager earlier this month, saying he had their "unwavering support," but vice chairman Aiyawatt Srivaddhanaprabha said it was in the best interests of the club for the 65-year-old to be dismissed.

Srivaddhanaprabha said: "This has been the most difficult decision we have had to make in nearly seven years since King Power took ownership of Leicester City. But we are duty-bound to put the club's long-term interests above all sense of personal sentiment, no matter how strong that might be.
"Claudio has brought outstanding qualities to his office. His skilful management, powers of motivation and measured approach have been reflective of the rich experience we always knew he would bring to Leicester City. His warmth, charm and charisma have helped transform perceptions of the club and develop its profile on a global scale. We will forever be grateful to him for what he has helped us to achieve.

"It was never our expectation that the extraordinary feats of last season should be replicated this season. Indeed, survival in the Premier League was our first and only target at the start of the campaign. But we are now faced with a fight to reach that objective and feel a change is necessary to maximise the opportunity presented by the final 13 games."

Leicester have lost seven of their past nine games in all competitions, with the only win in that span an FA Cup replay against Derby County. They were dumped out of the FA Cup last weekend by third-tier Millwall, who were reduced to 10 men, leading Ranieri hit out at his players after the game.

"I want to speak again with the players and say we have to fight every match," Ranieri said. "Who wants to fight? Tell me. I need the soldiers, I need the gladiators."

Assistant manager Craig Shakespeare and first-team coach Mike Stowell, meanwhile, will take charge of the Leicester squad until a new manager is appointed.

Ranieri's assistant and first-team coach Paolo Benetti, as well as his first-team sport science and conditioning coach Andrea Azzalin, have also departed with him.

Tonto Dikeh’s alienated hubby signs singer, Praiz

Despite the crisis rocking his marriage, Tonto Dikeh's alienated hubby, Olakunle Churchill, shocked many critics, Tuesday, when he unveiled popular singer, Praiz Adejo, as one of his foundation, Big Church Foundation, ambassadors for the 2017 project year. The signing of the deal was done at the Ikoyi, Lagos boardroom of the foundation.

At the unveiling board conference was the current Ambassador for Women and Child, actress Rosaline Meurer, who has been at the centre of Tonto Dikeh's marital mess, the Foundation Executive Manager of Abuja branch, Tomiwa Yebo, Foundation coordinator/ PR, Mr. Raphael Cudjoe, Head of IT, Clay-Multi Media Department, Maureen Cyril of GoodGirl Foundation, Ivy Cypriel of Crown and Glamour TV among others.
Speaking at the event, Dr. Olakunle Churchill said, they needed a new Ambassador for the Big Church Foundation to spearhead the Agriculture and Mining project which is targeting the Nigerian youths. He described the choice of Praiz as a worthy one, as he has worked with the Big Church Foundation during charity campaigns in the past.'

On his part, Praiz said in a post, 'It gives me great pleasure to be part of this great team @bigchurchfoundation, empowering the youth, helping the less privileged and physically challenged persons!! Thank you @bigchurchhaven for having me on board.'

Meanwhile, the presence of the light-skinned beauty at the event raised a lot of unanswered questions. Recall that Dr. Churchill in a recent interview denied having any relationship with Rosaline who was then called his personal assistant .
Mr Churchill had claimed that he didn't have a female PA.

However, this would be Praiz's first major endorsement this year, which will see him pilot the empowerment of 36,000 youths in Nigeria through the 36 states.

Hoodlums Kill Fulani Herdsman, Throw Body Into River In Delta State

Suspected hoodlums in Emu-Ebendo community, Ndokwa West Local Council of Delta State have allegedly killed a herdsman, Haruna Mohammed, in an encounter, which occurred on Sunday evening.

The unidentified hoodlums later threw the body into a flowing river within the community. The incident, it was gathered yesterday, is generating tension and fears of reprisals in the community.

According to a source, the hoodlums ran into the herdsman and his cattle in the bush while they were attempting to ambush and rob unsuspecting persons, when a quarrel ensured.

The herdsman was said to have attacked them with his bow and arrow. Unfortunately for him, the hoodlums overpowered him and shot him.

The Police Commissioner in the state, Mr. Zanna Ibrahim, confirmed that the body of the herdsman was recovered in the flowing river by some residents who had gone to fetch drinking water, adding that some persons have already been arrested in connection with the act.
“We will deal with any hoodlum or herdsman, who breaches the law. Our men are everywhere to comb and bring to book trouble-makers,” he said, adding that the suspects were apprehended at Umusati after an intelligence gathering by a combined team of the police in Abbi Division and men of the local vigilance group.

In another development, women in Umusam community, Utagba-Ogbe kingdom, Ndokwa West Local Council have called on the state and federal governments to come to their aid over alleged herdsmen menace in their community.

The women, numbering over 5,000, on Monday thronged to the farmlands in search of the cattle rearers, who had allegedly destroyed their farm crops.

Speaking with The Guardian on phone, Chief Patrick Igwe, traditional ruler of the community, explained that the women took the action following the wanton destruction of their farm crops, especially cassava.
He said farming is the major occupation of the people. While regretting the havoc allegedly wreaked by the herdsmen, he pleaded with the government and law enforcement agencies to intervene before the crisis escalates.

RIP: Man who drank insecticide following the crash of MMM-Nigeria dies

A man identified as Ada Kole has died in Kubwa in the Federal Capital
Territory after drinking insecticide following the crash of the
Mavrodi Mondial Movement (MMM) Ponzi scheme in Nigeria.

The MMM, whose wedding was rescheduled from December last year to May
2017 reportedly died on Monday night following complications arising
from the poison he took late last year.

Kole had reportedly invested about N750,000 in the scheme in November
last year and was expecting to get his 30 per cent income when the MMM
crashed and he lost his money.
A family source said Kole passed away after suffering from stomach
complications as a result of the poison.

"Kole died yesterday (Monday) evening and his body has been deposited
in a mortuary. He died from the complications he suffered from the
poison he took last year. He had a terrible stomach ache and was
rushed to the hospital where he died,"the source said.

Asked if the Benue State indigene was paid by the MMM before his
demise, the source said, "No, he was not paid. In fact, he threatened
to arrest his guider before the stomach upset returned last week and
we rushed him to the hospital where he finally died."

It was gathered that his fiancée had been inconsolable since his passage.

Kole had earlier opened up on his predicament during a phone-in radio
programme in Abuja last December where he admitted making profits from
the scheme before it crashed.
He explained that he initially invested N20,000 and got 30 per cent
interest a few weeks later.

He said: "I came to Abuja from Benue a few months back in preparation
for my wedding and my friend introduced me to the MMM thing. He told
me about the benefit involved, though I was a bit hesitant about it
but he succeeded in convincing me to register under him.

"To be honest, I initially invested N20,000 into the scheme and I got
30 per cent the following month. The following month, I did N50,000
and I still got 30 per cent commission and my full investment back."

He then decided to increase his investment so he could make more money.

"This time, I believed it was real and I decided to increase my
investment. Before then, my fiancée had warned me against it. So I
went to my cooperative to obtain a loan and they gladly gave, thinking
it was for my wedding," he said.
"I put in N750k last month (November 2016) hoping it would yield 30
per cent income this month (December) only to wake up one morning to
discover that my account has been suspended."

The deceased had told his interviewer that he took the insecticide
because he did not know how to tell his fiancée that he had lost the
money for their wedding.

He added: "To be sincere, the best option I had then was to take my
life because I didn't know how I was going to face my woman. I didn't
even know when I took the insecticide."

The FCT police spokesman, Anjuguri Manzah said Kole's death had yet to
be reported to the police.

Relevant authorities including the National Assembly, Central Bank of
Nigeria (CBN), Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) and the
police had warned Nigerians against investing in the scheme.

I Won't Descend To Fayose’s Level, Says Modu Sheriff

Controversial National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP)
Alhaji Ali Modu Sheriff, said in Abuja in Wednesday, that he will not
descend to the level of Governor Ayo Fayose of Ekiti State.

Fayose has remained vocal in his criticism of Sheriff since the Court
of Appeal pronounced him the chairman of the party on Friday.

Speaking to members of the party from the South-West in his office
about the repeated tirades of the governor on him, Sheriff said there
would be no difference between both men should he choose to reply the
governor.

He also pleaded with the other governors not to destroy the party.

"Ali Sheriff is not here to remain as National Chairman," he said,
promising to depart as soon as the national convention is held.
He promised a credible convention, adding that the election of leaders
accepted by the grassroots is his mission and that he will do that by
the grace of God.

Pleading for peace in the PDP, he said: "Let's build this party. If
you like and you want to change something, wait for the convention and
vote for the person you like, and Nigerians and the world will see
that you're are validly elected by the PDP."
He described the governors as being very important, saying they are
leaders of this party by their own right, but should not divide the
party.

Of the Ekiti State governor, he said, "I beg him to respect PDP,
whatever he said about me posterity would judge him. He will devote
more energy and time for the rebuilding of PDP."

He also told his guests that he and his rival for the office of
national chairman, Senator Ahmed Makarfi, had mutually agreed before
the appeal court delivered the judgment not to further challenge it,
whatever it was.
"Makarfi and I resolved that whatever is the outcome of the appeal
court judgment that we will not destroy our party, that once we get
the judgment from the Court of Appeal that will be the final judgement
for everybody.

"We spoke to all Nigerians about this, it is on record, but all the
same everybody has the right to do what he wants to do. But it is good
to place on record what we have as agreement.

"Now the court of appeal has made a pronouncement that the status quo
ante be maintained being that myself and the legally adjudged party
exco who did not resign from office voluntarily because anyone has the
right to resign voluntarily remain in office."

He said he would reopen the National Secretariat of the party before Friday.

Rivers State Re-Run Election: Nigeria Police Force Denies Indictment By INEC

The Nigeria Police Force has described, as false and misleading, a
media report suggesting that it was indicted for its role in
legislative re-run elections in Rivers State, which held in December.
The news report in question was published in Wednesday's edition and
it stated that the Nigeria Police Force was indicted by a report of
the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) on the Rivers
State re-run elections.
The reaction of the Force was contained in a statement signed by Chief
Superintendent of Police (CSP) Jimoh O. Moshood, Force Public
Relations Officer (FPRO). The statement explained that the
Inspector-General of Police, Mr. Lawal K Idris, set up an
investigative panel comprising senior police officers and officers of
the Directorate of State Security Service (DSS) to investigate
irregularities, incidents of violence and the roles of security
agencies, including the Police; INEC and other stakeholders deployed
for the re-run elections.

The joint investigative panel, the statement further noted, was also
mandated to investigate the prevalence of armed robbery,
kidnapping/hostage taking, hijack of election materials and attacks on
the electorate, INEC staff, ad-hoc electoral personnel. The Police
added that the panel submitted its report to the Inspector General of
Police on February 7.

"The Nigeria Police Force identified and has proactively taken action
against six Police officers, who were indicted by the Investigative
Panel report to have compromised, engaged in serious misconduct,
misused of firearms, and for other conducts in violation of the
Electoral Act and other enabling laws during the Rivers rerun
election.

"They were arrested, investigated and subjected to internal
disciplinary measures, after being found guilty were dismissed from
the Force and paraded before the media on January 6, 2017 and are
awaiting prosecution. Other agencies whose personnel were also
indicted by the Joint Investigative Panel are expected to do the same
to their personnel indicted in the report without any further delay,"
the statement said.

It added that 23 INEC electoral officials and two of the commission's
administrative officials indicted by the panel were arrested,
investigated and admitted collecting a total of N111, 300,000 from Mr.
Nyesom Wike, governor of Rivers State.
"The money was recovered from them. They were granted bail to the
Director of Human Resources, INEC Headquarters Abuja.

"The report, as quoted above, is a disservice to the Nigeria Police
Force because all the issues raised were discovered by the Joint
Investigative Panel and have been dealt with. The story is, therefore,
misleading, malicious and capable of misinforming members of the
public on the statutory roles of the Nigeria Police Force," the
statement said.

It maintained that the Nigeria Police Force remains apolitical and
will continue to ensure that election security is guaranteed across
the country.

I Want To Go To London… To See Buhari - Reuben Abati

When 15 million plus Nigerians voted for President Muhammadu Buhari in
the 2015 General elections, their expectation was that he would be
available to serve them 24/7/365, and that those who fielded him as
their candidate had done their home work to avoid what is curiously
becoming the Katsina problem in Nigerian politics. Katsina! But we
have now found ourselves in a situation whereby our President is now
in London, for more than one month sir, ma, and we are here, and we
have an acting President, who according to everybody, including the
extremists and the mischievous, and the politically partisan, is
beginning to try his best, with his admirers, now praying for the
worst.
For that reason alone, we have an emotionally, politically and
spiritually divided country on our hands. Don't mind what they tell
you, and don't deceive yourself, the Nigerian Presidency is in
turmoil. It is not our wish. It is not what the voters asked for. But
that is how democracy works. You cannot predict the results that
democracy produces. Not even in America. Or Russia.
Now that we have found ourselves in this situation, anyway – an
absentee President trying to remain relevant and an acting President
struggling to put up appearances, and struggling harder not to be seen
to be ambitious (sorry, Prof. I was your student but I have something
to say sir, I don't mean any harm – truth be told), where should the
Nigerian people stand? For the past one month, we have all been
trapped in a post-truth situation, pretending as if all is normal. We
should stop pretending.
Those who supported and are supporting the APC that brought President
Muhammadu Buhari to power and office cannot talk. They cannot talk due
to embarrassment and shame. They are busy putting up a face. But for
how long can they do this? The Nigerian media is also on its knees,
looking so pitiable, with the exception of a few blogs, newspapers
that we can't even trust, professional media consultants who are in
disarray, a few bloggers and then some gentlemen: Pa Ikhide, Farooq
Kperogi, Sonala Olumhense, Omoyele Sowore, Pius Adesanmi and Okey
Ndibe who have since been specially illuminated as they journeyed to
Damascus.
I will return to this subject some other day. But I think right now,
we should begin to take the subject of the absence of President
Muhammadu Buhari more seriously. Bukola Saraki, our Senate President
has visited him in London, twice, within two weeks. I don't think we
should leave this business of visiting the President to party
chieftains, the executive and the Federal Legislature. If care is not
taken, Senator Saraki may be tempted to visit the President again next
week. And the week after and he may even be tempted to travel with all
the members of the National Assembly. There must be equity in this
matter.
Figure it out as follows: we all know that President Buhari is now in
London and he is the man Nigerians chose as their President in 2015.
We cannot forsake him. He is in London on working leave, for more than
one month now, and we don't know when that leave will end. We have
been told it will end soon. Later. One day. Whenever. We are not God.
Let the leave end when it will. But we, the people, have a duty to
stand by our President. This is the point of this article. We are
Africans. We have traditions. We respect elders. We don't joke with
old age. The time has come, right now, for Nigerians to behave like
Africans.
We should therefore, not leave this business of visiting to Senator
Busola Saraki alone. Party chieftains have visited Mr. President. The
leadership of the National Assembly has also gone to London to be part
of President Buhari's working leave. I think
Vice-President-Acting-President Yemi Osinabjo should also visit his
boss, this week, next week, or ASAP. Henceforth, he should be in
London at least once a week. Let us stop pretending that the President
is not in charge. He is. If Aso Villa is now in London, let us make it
work. The Acting President and the real President need quality face
time. If the acting President must go to London everyday, let him do
so, but don't let us run Nigeria by telephone or DHL Am I making
sense? I am not talking about common sense. I mean real sense. So, do
I make any sense at all?
After the Acting President's visit, all former Presidents should also
start going to London to see the President. Those former Presidents
are not as harmless as they pretend to be. They are projected to the
public as advisers but they are more than that: they all left
something in Aso Villa that makes them eternally powerful. It is like
leaving your DNA in a woman's body. They should be allowed or perhaps
encouraged to visit President Buhari while he is on working leave. I
think our Baba in Abeokuta, Ota and Ibogun should be the first to
visit. That may negate the order of seniority, but trust the Ebora Owu
to return from London with front-page news! After him, the others can
start visiting and probably advise on the possibility of holding a
Council of State meeting in London. As it were, the Nigerian
Constitution does not insist that the Council of State Meeting must be
held inside Nigeria. The main subject of that first historic,
diaspora, Council of State Meeting should be phrased by OBJ in his own
unique way: "Momodu: are you well or sick?"
There is something called the separation of powers. I don't want to
disrespect mi'lords but I think they too should go to London. The
National Judicial Council (NJC) should put together a high-powered
delegation of judges from every part of the country, from all
divisions, and level, to proceed post-haste to London to visit, no, to
confer with President Buhari on matters of judicial interest to the
nation. But Sirs, don't go there and talk about the welfare of judges,
or the non-payment of your entitlements – if you try that, well, I
won't be in a position to tell you what awaits you on your return. You
know mi'lords, as well as I do, that the law in Nigeria is now being
made to look truly like an ass!
After the judges, okay may be the Nigerian Bar Association should also
send a delegation, but I don't trust many of our lawyers. They think
they know the law, and they could go to London and say things that
will disrupt the President's working leave. To make that impossible,
members of the NBA should be booked on an Arik flight to London,
please. But if they get there, fine. The next delegation should be
that of Permanent Secretaries. These ones should spend more than a
week in London with the President. In fact, they can stay with him
till he returns. If they also have medical issues, they should use the
opportunity to ask for tests, with the condition that they must return
immediately the President leaves London, notwithstanding the status of
their own medical tests!
Once the Permanent Secretaries have been fully accommodated in London,
the Ministers, those who were once dismissed by their own employer as
"noise-makers", and who have proven to be no better, should also visit
London. They can go ahead and make as much noise as they wish in
London and even enjoy the benefit of a full Federal Executive Council
Meeting. I suspect that this will be a particularly productive FEC
meeting. If the people in the Foreign Affairs Ministry know what they
are doing, however, they would arrange ahead of that meeting in
London, a special meeting with Theresa May, Prime Minister of Great
Britain, followed by a dinner with Her Majesty the Queen of England,
with a proviso, please, please, please, that nobody should bring up
the issue of Biafra or Southern Kaduna after shaking the Queen's hand,
and there should be a strict guarantee that President Buhari will be
accompanied by his extremely beautiful wife, Aisha, and he will not,
meeting the Queen, no matter how excited, make the mistake of
referring to "za oza room".
Stop laughing, my friend; this is how you people cause problems for
innocent writers. What I am now trying to add having made all these
points above, is that the Governors' Forum should also visit President
Buhari in London. The Governors have already signified their intention
to do so and that seems to be fine with the Nigerian public. The
Governors should therefore appoint representatives who should proceed
to London. When they meet with the President, they should hold a
special prayer session with three prayer points: one, that President
Buhari will not work for another person to come and eat; two: that the
demons of Aso Rock will spare and forgive him and his family; three:
that President Buhari will return to Nigeria with his two feet. The
Governor to lead the prayer should be Peter Ayo Fayose of Ekiti State.

If he starts sounding as he has been sounding in recent times, Nasir
el-Rufai should be asked to take the microphone from him. And if Nasir
sounds like he is playing politics, as he has been doing, Adams
Oshiomhole who will like to be there anyway, as a Governor ex-officio,
should be given the microphone and asked to pray for the President as
best as he can or as best as Trotsky could.

I have left out some people. In the past month, some Imams and ulamas
and concerned relatives have been reported in the media, holding
prayer sessions for a hale and hearty President who is just in London
to enjoy the weather and do some quality check-ups, private and
public. These prayer warriors have prayed and prayed in Abuja, Daura,
Borno and everywhere else. The matter is so serious that nobody should
be surprised if Rochas Okorocha or James Ibori organizes a prayer
session for Muhammadu Buhari. This is the biggest business in Nigeria
at this moment.

I think, therefore, that we should also encourage the ulamas and the
imams to visit.

Let them go to London and pray for their President. We have been told
they have been sending prayers through skype, whatsapp and the air,
the same channels that GSM service providers in Nigeria now want to
block. Let the imams go to London then and let the verses of the Holy
Quoran rain down. It will be unfair not to allow Christian leaders to
go to London too. They are also anxious to go to London. Pastor Tunde
Bakare, my beloved, secondary school senior should lead that team. His
job should be to screen out any Pastor with Biafra, or Southern Kaduna
or pro-PDP blood in him or her. I mean Pastors like Reno Omokri, Ebun
Adegboruwa…. you get what I am saying? The prayer should be
commissioned!

Traditional rulers, bloggers, public intellectuals, trolls, and
journalists! Oh, I almost forgot. I think we should also be invited to
London to have tea with the President. I volunteer to lead that team
but if I am considered unpopular, since they say I am not one of them,
let @ikhide, @akaebube, or @dejiadeyanju, @realFFK, or @YeleSowore, be
the team leader. But please, ….

Seun Egbegbe Remains In Prison Custody As Bail Application Hearing Stalls

Filmmaker Olajide Oluwaseun Kareem, more popularly known as Seun
Egbegbe, will remain in prison custody, as his application for bail
was put on hold due to the failure of the police to file a counter
affidavit.

The prosecutor, Innocent Anyigor, informed the court that the police
were unable to file a counter affidavit to hear Mr. Egbegbe's plea
because the police officer who would swear to the affidavit was ill.

"We have been served an affidavit but we are unable to file a counter
affidavit because the police officer who is supposed to depose to the
counter affidavit is sick. Because of this development, we will leave
the matter in discretion of the court to decide on what to do," the
prosecutor informed the court.

In response, the presiding judge, Justice Oluremi Oguntoyinbo, ordered
the police to present any officer who would depose to the counter
affidavit and subsequently adjourned the hearing of the bail
application to Friday, February 24, 2017.

The judge said, "Since the matter has been left in discretion of the
court, the court hereby gives the police till Thursday to file a
counter affidavit."

Mr. Egbegbe was arraigned alongside Oyekan Ayomide in a 39-count
charge for allegedly defrauding some Bureau De Change (BDC) operators
of N40.647 million, $29,800 and £4,815 at different areas in Lagos
State between 2016 and February 2, 2017. The offense contravenes the
provisions of the Advance Fee Fraud and Other Related Offences Act
2006.

How We Recovered $1m In Alex Badeh’s House - Witness

A prosecution witness, Goji Mohammed, on Tuesday, February 21, 2017

gave a vivid explanation of how the operatives of the Economic and
Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) recovered one million dollars
during a raid conducted on the house of a former Chief of Defence
Staff, Alex Badeh, who is standing trial along Iyalikam Nigeria
Limited on a 10-count charge bordering on money laundering, criminal
breach of trust and corruption to the tune of N3.97 billion.

Badeh allegedly abused his office as CDS by using the dollar
equivalent of the sum of N1.4billion removed from the accounts of the
Nigerian Air Force to purchase properties in choice areas of Abuja
between January and December, 2013.

Mohammed, who testified as PW15, told Justice Okon Abang of the
Federal High Court sitting in Maitama, Abuja that he was a member of
the Special Task Force, STF, team whose mandate was to investigate
cases reported to the Commission from the NSA's office.

Led in evidence by Rotimi Jacobs, SAN, Mohammed said, "I was
instructed to conduct a search by the Head of the STF 'Team B' on a
property belonging to the defendant (Badeh) located at No 2b Nelson
Mandela Street, Asokoro Abuja".

According to him, "In early February 2016, the defendant was brought
out of detention facility to witness the search on his property and
his assistant was also present. The search was conducted and a lot of
documents including landed property documents, bank account document
were recovered. We also discovered that some of the furniture in the
house contained the defendant's name. We took record of the items
after which the Investigating Officer, IO, signed and the defendant
counter-signed."

The witness shed more light on how the second search was conducted
with the help of an intelligence report received on another property
belonging to the Badeh which is located at No. 6, Ogun River street,
Maitama, Abuja.

"In the report, there were allegations of many cars including SUV
salon parked within the premises of the building. Getting to the
building, we discovered it was empty, no cars, no security personnel",
Mohammed said.
He explained how they entered the house through the balcony as the
front security door and the back door were all locked. He also
narrated how all the rooms were searched one after another.

"In the upstairs, we discovered the biggest room which has a bed with
side drawers and a large wardrobe. In one of the wardrobes, at the
upper compartment, there was a pack of kettle, as we opened it, we saw
the bag filled with money in Dollars (USD) and we counted the money
which is in 16 bundles of $50,000 each. We also found two sealed
bundles of $100,000 each, giving a total of one million dollars", said
Mohammed.

The PW15 told the court that a red box containing a knife which had an
encrypted name and 2 way bills of furniture supplied to the building
were also recovered. He added that the security of the house was
around when the search was conducted.

Jacobs sought to tender the search warrant, red box as well as the 2
way bills in evidence but was objected by counsel to the defendant,
Lasun Sanusi, SAN, who prayed to be obliged with copies of the
documents and urged the court to adjourn the matter in order for him
to ask his client questions on it.

Responding, Jacobs argued that the defence counsel had enough notice
as it was number 20 on the list filed on February 26, 2016. He craved
the indulgence of the court to show the video clip of how the search
was conducted.
Furthermore, Sanusi opposed the admissibility of the way bill and the
red box. He urged the court to reject it adding that they were
irrelevant as the search was conducted without the defendant in
presence.

But, Jacobs cited Section 149 and 150 of the Administration of
Criminal Justice Act, 2016 adding that, search warrant is to be made
in front of two witnesses and the person the warrant is addressed to.
He went further to explain how the witness can be any one in the
neighbourhood.

The case has been adjourned to February 23, 2017 for continuation of trial.

EFCC To Arraign INEC Official, Gogo Anderson Waribo Over Alleged N16m Bribe

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, has concluded
arrangements to prosecute a Deputy Director of the Independent
Electoral Commission, INEC, in Akwa Ibom State, and former Electoral
Officer in Rivers State, Gogo Anderson Waribo for bribe taking.

Waribo allegedly collected N16million linked to the N23billion slush
fund linked to Diezani Allison-Madueke during the 2015 general
election, with the aim of influencing the outcome of the election.

He was arrested by EFCC operatives following intelligence report that
some INEC officers conspired with some staff of Fidelity Bank to
defraud the Federal Government of several millions of naira.

Although he denied the allegations, investigation revealed that the
INEC Deputy Director's name was on the list of the "bribe takers".

It was revealed that he received N16 million through his First Bank
account on March 27, 2015 and gave N5 million to Peter Popnen, an ex-
INEC official.
He will be arraigned as soon as investigation is completed.

National Legislators Want Control of N500B SIP, Government Officials Say

Some members of the National Assembly have set their sights on a fat
new pie: President Muhammadu Buhari's N500B Social Investment Programs
(SIP).

Officials of the Budget and Planning Ministry, which is responsible
for disbursing the fund, say the Senators and Representatives have
tabled a list of their demands regarding how they can share of the
money.

The sources say the legislators are demanding that unless they are
allowed to select the beneficiaries of the SIP as well as award and
take contracts under the scheme, they would simply terminate the
program, which is designed to benefit ordinary Nigerians including the
most vulnerable and the poorest, as well as unemployed youths.

One Senator from one of the Niger Delta States threatened to "kill the
entire program," if Senators are not allowed to choose beneficiaries
of the N-Power jobs for unemployed graduates, while a Representative
from Kano State specifically demanded contract benefits. According to
a Kano State government source, it took the intervention of the
governor of that state to call the Representative to order.

Similarly, some Senators have demanded of the Presidency that Senators
be allowed to nominate 50 beneficiaries each for N-Power. That is in
opposition to a selection system that would guarantee equal
opportunity for all Nigerian youth by means of an online application
process. That system has already allowed in 200,000 Nigerian
previously unemployed graduates who got in without needing to press
any buttons whatsoever.
The Presidency has explained that the beneficiaries of all the SIPs
are being produced through that fair online application process, which
is also easily audited and cross-checked.

In several instances, some of the National Assembly and other partisan
political operatives have been reported to be selling illegal
application forms to unsuspecting Nigerians and charging illegal fees
in the process.

Said a government official, "They simply don't understand that
President Buhari would not tolerate any form of diversion of the
resources. Many of them still think it is business as usual. Why are
National Assembly members so desperate and when did it become a duty
of the legislator to implement or execute policies?"
An informed source explained that if the Buhari administration ever
succumbs to the demand of legislators to choose beneficiaries, not
only would they produce bogus lists, they would also exploit them by
taking significant percentages of their stipends and other monetary
proceeds.

While it is true that the SIP budgetary allocations in the 2016 budget
is the largest of its kind in the country, similar efforts of its kind
are known to have been compromised in the past by political
opportunists who see such programs as opportunities to enrich
themselves rather than to deliver services to the targeted
demographics.

It would be recalled that already all the SIPs of the current
government have taken off. They include the employment of 200,000
graduates; the National Homegrown School Feeding program, in seven
states; and the Conditional Cash Transfer (CCT), which is being paid
to beneficiaries in nine states and is aimed at one million Nigerians
in its first budget cycle.
There is also the Government Economic and Enterprise Program, (GEEP),
which giving interest-free soft loans to Nigerians in over 13 states
of the federation in sums ranging from N10,000 to N100,000 each. GEEP
is meant to benefit about 1.6m Nigerian traders, and artisans, as well
as market men and women.
